In Genesis 28, Jacob finds himself in a lonely place, far from home and unsure of what’s next. As he sleeps, he dreams of a stairway reaching from earth to heaven, with angels moving up and down, and God standing above it, speaking promises of presence, protection, and purpose. It’s a moment of divine clarity—God revealing that Jacob is not alone, and that his journey is part of something far greater.

The image of the stairway calls to mind the lyrics of “Stairway to Heaven,” a song that speaks of longing, searching, and the idea that life’s choices shape our path. The song suggests that we often try to “buy” or build our way to peace or meaning, hoping that what we pursue will lead us to something lasting. But Jacob’s stairway wasn’t built by him—it was revealed by God. It wasn’t a reward for effort; it was a gift of grace. That’s the heart of this story: God meets us where we are, not because we’ve earned it, but because He chooses to.

Jacob wakes up and says, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it.” That’s a powerful realization. Sometimes, in the middle of our routines, questions, or even mistakes, we don’t recognize that God is already present. The stairway is not just a symbol of connection—it’s a reminder that heaven is closer than we think. And like Jacob, we’re invited to respond. He sets up a stone as a pillar and makes a vow, marking the moment with intention and commitment.

Reflection:  Where in your life might God already be present, even if you haven’t noticed? What’s one decision you can make today, big or small, that reflects trust in His presence and opens your heart to His guidance?
