I don’t’ know the Bible as well as I should. But I do believe the simple truths in it, and I’ve had enough years behind me to see how those truths play out in real life. John 3:17–21 says Jesus didn’t come to condemn the world, but to save it. That makes sense to me. Over time, I’ve learned that God isn’t waiting for us to mess up. He’s offering a better way of living life a day at a time —one that’s more open, more honest, and lighter to carry. Living in the light isn’t about being impressive; it’s about being real.

For me, living in the light shows up in ordinary, everyday choices. It’s not complicated, but it does take intention and continuous re-focusing nudges. These are 7 simple everyday things that have helped me: telling the truth even when it’s uncomfortable; keeping my word, especially when it costs me something; admitting when I’m wrong without making excuses; asking for forgiveness and letting go of pride; making time for family, because relationships outlast schedules and accomplishments; staying actively involved in my church, where faith is practiced alongside others and passed on to the next generation; and talking to God simply and honestly. Being part of a church has mattered more than I realized when I was younger—it shaped my life, grounded my family, and gave me a way to serve the community beyond myself.

I’ve learned that darkness isn’t always loud or obvious. Most of the time, it’s just small places where we avoid the truth or drift into isolation. Light, on the other hand, is choosing to live out in the open. The passage in John 3:17-21 reminds us that when we step into the light, we often discover God has already been at work in us. Life doesn’t get perfect, but it does get clearer—and lighter—when you stop hiding and start living straight.

Reflection: What are the 7 everyday practices that help you live honestly and openly? Which one could you lean into a little more this week for your own life, your family, and the community you serve?
