Epiphany reminds us of that remarkable moment in Matthew 2:1–12 when the three wise men recognized the significance of a star God placed in the sky. Scripture doesn’t give us their backstory, but it does show us their certainty: they knew this sign meant the birth of the “King of the Jews,” and they traveled with intention, bringing gifts fitting for royalty. Their journey wasn’t careless curiosity; it was a response to divine direction.

What stands out is that their path included both clarity and searching. The star guided them, yet they still had to stop in Jerusalem and ask questions. Their journey required persistence, discernment, and the humility to seek help along the way. That combination feels very much like everyday faith—trusting God’s leading while still taking practical steps, asking for wisdom, and staying open to correction.

When the star settled over the place where Jesus was, the wise men were “overwhelmed with joy.” Their gifts—gold, frankincense, and myrrh—were expressions of reverence, honor, and recognition of who Jesus truly is. And when God warned them in a dream to return by another route, they obeyed immediately. Their story shows that genuine encounters with God often lead to changed direction, deeper joy, and a willingness to follow His guidance even when it alters our plans.

Reflection - Like the wise men, you may not have every detail of your journey laid out, but God provides guidance step by step. Pay attention to the “stars” He places in your path—moments of clarity, nudges of conviction, or unexpected encouragement. Follow them faithfully, trusting that God never wastes the steps of those who seek Him.
