Deuteronomy 31:6 (NIV): “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”

Mary wasn’t leading a nation like Israel, but some mornings felt just as heavy. Her battlefield was a workplace meeting, a medical test, or a conversation she dreaded. On those days, she pulled on her “brave socks,” a small reminder that she didn’t face the unknown alone. Deuteronomy 31:6 was God’s word to His people in a fearful season, but for Mary it became her daily courage: the Lord her God went with her, and He would never leave her.

For Abraham, faith meant trusting God with promises that looked impossible. For Mary, faith meant trusting Him with her kids, her finances, her future. Fear tried to whisper that she wasn’t enough, but God’s presence drowned out that lie. Courage wasn’t about being fearless, it was about walking forward with shaking hands and a steady heart, anchored in the One who promised to stay.

That same invitation rests with us today. Fear has many names—bills, illness, conflict, loneliness—but God’s answer is always the same: Do not be afraid. I am with you. Brave socks may look ordinary, but they symbolize a greater truth: every step forward is a step with God beside us. The ground is uncertain, but the Companion is sure.

Reflection: What fear is trying to steal your courage right now? Name it before God, then picture yourself stepping forward—socks on, shoulders back—trusting His presence to steady you. Where is He asking you to trade trembling for trust?
