Maybe you and I have more in common with Zacchaeus than we’d like to admit. We may not be tax collectors, but we’ve all made choices we’re not particularly proud of. We’ve hurt people, taken shortcuts, put ourselves first, or simply got so caught up in day-to-day life that we lost sight of what really matters. Just like Zacchaeus, sometimes we may find ourselves standing on the outside looking in, wondering if Jesus really has any interest in someone like us.
But Zacchaeus climbed that tree because he wanted to see Jesus. Maybe there was something inside him that knew he needed something different. What I love about this story is that Jesus didn’t look up and say, “There’s that Zacchaeus—the guy who messed things up.” Jesus simply said, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for I must stay at your house today.” Jesus saw him—not the reputation, not the mistakes, not the past. He saw the person underneath it all. And that encounter changed Zacchaeus. He didn’t just feel forgiven; he decided to live differently.
Maybe we need to remember that Jesus sees us the same way. He knows the mistakes we’ve made and the things we wish we could undo, but he doesn’t ask us to clean ourselves up before he comes into our lives. He meets us right where we are. The question is what we do after we’ve been seen and loved so completely. Like Zacchaeus, we can stay stuck in our old ways, or we can climb down from the tree and start living differently—one choice, one relationship, one act of grace at a time.
Reflection: Where in my life am I hiding or standing on the outside looking in? What is Jesus asking me to change? Am I willing to come down from the tree and take the next step?
