“See, I am doing a new thing!” — Isaiah 43:19
When God spoke through Isaiah, He reminded His people not to be afraid because they belonged to Him. He had guided them through every challenge and promised to continue making a way forward. Those words feel especially meaningful as we reflect on the ministry of Rev. Betty Weaver. At God’s calling, Betty pressed pause on retirement and stepped into a season of service that helped shape the foundation and future of Ocean Springs UMC. During these three years, she nurtured us, prayed faithfully for our congregation, and rejoiced daily in what made this church so special—the commitment of its members, the love we share for one another, and our desire to meet needs wherever we can. She continually pointed us toward gratitude, encouraged us to trust God’s leading, and reminded us that faith is best expressed through serving others.
Like Isaiah’s message of hope and renewal, Betty’s ministry helped us see that God is always at work, creating new opportunities for faith, growth, and service. Through her leadership, we became more than a congregation; we became a church family. She inspired us to live out the spirit of John Wesley’s challenge to “Do all the good you can,” showing us what that looks like through everyday acts of kindness, compassion, and faithfulness. Betty’s gift to this church was not only her leadership but also the confidence she instilled in us to continue God’s work together.
Now, as Betty closes this chapter and begins a well-earned retirement, we do so with confidence rather than uncertainty. The foundation is strong, the mission remains clear, and the same God who called her here continues to guide our future. The new thing God is doing through this church is not ending—it is continuing. Because of Betty’s faithfulness, we move forward with grateful hearts, willing hands, and a renewed commitment to love God, love one another, and serve wherever we are called.
As one chapter closes and another begins, we thank God for faithful leaders who help us recognize His presence and purpose. Betty, thank you for your prayers, your wisdom, your encouragement, and your love for this church. You have left a lasting mark on our hearts, and you will always hold a very special place in the life of this congregation.
